The Politician Season 2 Review: 6 Ups & 2 Downs
4. It's Very Self-Aware
While the show has those signature Ryan Murphy eccentricities to it, what sets it apart from his previous shows is the fact that it's also a political satire, so while the likes of Glee and Scream Queens were often off-the-wall for the sake of being off-the-wall, The Politician almost gets away with it because of the type of show that it is.
That lends itself nicely to some of the more vibrant moments because the show's unapologetically bombastic approach is exactly what Murphy and co. are aiming for. The writing offers an interesting look at how 'woke' one can be, the effect that cancel culture has on those who experience it and how powerful people can use all of that to manipulate others into seeing things their way. And the show uses all of that to dive into how one generation views the other, and the changes that surrounded each of those respective generations.
Through some of its ludicrous plot developments (and some clever use of subtext) it gives us an entertaining social commentary, highlighting elements, ideologies and figureheads of our society in the process.
Yes, The Politician is at times bonkers, but almost everything it does, it does with a purpose and that is when the show truly succeeds.
