The Politician Season 2 Review: 6 Ups & 2 Downs
5. The Voters
Last season's standalone voter episode was a particularly polarizing one because, though the idea of seeing the political race through the eyes of a potential voter was a great idea, the execution left a lot to be desired. This was one of the times when the satirical tone overwhelmed the show because the voter in question was anything but interesting and its misguided (and stereotypical) attempt to portray a teenage boy just undermined the whole thing.
This writer will admit that he was apprehensive when he first saw the formula was being recycled for this season's midseason standalone, but the truth is that 'The Voters' was a much better attempt.
The mother/daughter dynamic paved the way for conversations about differing views, changing times and 'age vs. experience' between two different generations of the same family - one that many will no doubt find all too familiar. Furthermore, the writers also went to great lengths to highlight both sides of the political race, driving home the fact that neither Payton nor Dede were perfectly moral human beings, but their drive to make the world a better place, if you will, was legitimate... even if they were willing to use dated or outlandish methods to make it happen.
An impressive 'both sides of the story' approach, 'The Voters' was a major improvement over last season's attempt and gave viewers an insightful look at the political race from the outside. And it illustrated that voters hoping for a better world really do have the power to change it.
