The Simpsons: 10 Awesome Things You Forgot Ever Happened

6. Lisa Gave Up Meat - Lisa The Vegetarian (s7e5)

The Simpsons maintains the status quo more than almost any show. No matter what crazy antics occur, everything is back to normal by the end of each episode. (How else can you explain how Maggie is still a baby after 33 years?)

So, many people expected a similar result in the episode, Lisa the Vegetarian, when Lisa vows to give up meat. But after all these years, Lisa still maintains her veggie lifestyle.

Interestingly, this development is because of Paul McCartney and his ex-wife, Linda. The couple agreed to star in this episode on the condition that Lisa remains a vegetarian for the rest of the series.

Although this development may not sound like a big deal, it proved the titular family could still grow and change. It was also cool to see Lisa, who normally acts like a goody two-shoes, flagrantly defy her family's wishes after they push her to eat meat.

Even though The Simpsons is always eager to poke fun at any topic, this storyline take the concept of vegetarianism seriously. When Lisa talks to Apu about the pressure she's under from her family, his monologue about getting "people to change is through tolerance and understanding" is a simple but powerful message which has stayed with many viewers.
