The Simpsons: 10 Awesome Things You Forgot Ever Happened
4. The Truth About Jebediah Springfield - Lisa The Iconoclast (s7e16)
Season 7's episode, Lisa the Iconoclast, was a gamechanger for the series (and not just because it coined the words "embiggen" and "cromulent".) In this storyline, Lisa finds a letter written by the town's founder, Jebediah Springfield, revealing his entire legacy is a lie.
In reality, he was a deranged pirate called Hans Sprungfeld who tried to kill George Washington. Eager to set everyone right, Lisa begins telling everybody the truth. Naturally, people don't want to believe their hero is a fraud and so, dismiss her claims.
In the end, Lisa finds irrefutable proof that Sprungfeld was a charlatan. As she prepares to publicly reveal her evidence, she backs down, believing that speaking the truth will cause more harm than good.
At first, this seems like a big moment since it rewrites Jebediah Springfield into a maniacal villain. But what's more important is this is one of the first times Lisa has shown real restraint.
Even though Lisa is pure at heart, she's always been a know-all and a braggart. The fact that she didn't drop the biggest bombshell possible on the townspeople when she had the chance proves Lisa knows that being ignorantly blissful can be better than being right.
