The Simpsons: 10 Best Characters Voiced By Harry Shearer

1. Ned Flanders

Whilst Harry Shearer’s unique vocal performances are synonymous with the characters he has voiced, Ned Flanders is one of the few whose entire character was shaped by the performance that he gave, and because of this he makes the top of the list.

Ned was originally conceived as a small background character with a cheery disposition and a higher standing in the neighbourhood, which was a source of jealousy and irritance for Homer Simpson. Shearer’s personality and warmth fit the character so completely that the decision was made to not only make Ned be a bigger part of the series, but also that he should be a devout Christian; now an element of his character that it seems he wouldn’t be the same without.

Whilst his faith remains strong and a key part of his character, we have also seen Ned stumble and give in to temptation...and even marry a cocktail waitress in Vegas! Far from a one-note character, Ned has given us countless memorable moments, and a host of unforgettable quotes, and it is the charming vocal performance of Shearer that we have to thank for making this character what he is today.
