The Simpsons: 10 Underrated Episodes No One Talks About
7. The Blunder Years
By season 13 of The Simpsons the golden age was well and truly in the past, but there were still a handful of great episodes to be enjoyed. The likes of 'I Am Furious Yellow' and 'Papa's Got a Brand New Badge' are regarded as the best of the bunch, but 'The Blunder Years' is just as good as either of them.
Admittedly, the episode does get off to a relatively slow start with Marge's obsession with a paper towel mascot, but once we move past Homer's Chad Sexington prank, it becomes a lot better, and develops into a strong episode overall.
Similarly to Eternal Moonshine, it is based around a genuinely compelling mystery as the family embark on a journey to discover what traumatised Homer when he was a child, concluding with the reveal that it was that he stumbled upon the rotting corpse of Waylon Smithers Sr. It's actually quite a sweet ending, and goes a long way to explaining the relationship and loyalty Smithers and Mr. Burns both share with each other.
As part of the mystery, we also get to see the young Moe Szyslak Experience featuring Homer, made so much funnier by the inclusion of a young Fat Tony, Legs, and Louie. The writers even found time to take a shot at the overplayed 'memory' of Homer jumping over Springfield Gorge.
