The Simpsons: 8 Recent Big Moments You Might Have Missed
1. Addressing Controversy Through Lisa
There was a lot of good to come from the criticisms of The Simpsons' lack of diversity in the voicing booth, with the show making a conscious effort to do better. However, the way the it responded to its critics in this regard to begin with pissed a LOT of people off.
This happened in season 29's 'No Good Read Goes Unpunished'. When Marge reads Lisa a bed time story and tries to alter it to be a little less problematic, Lisa explains to her mother that sometimes things that were acceptable many years ago are no longer so today, and that there isn't anything the writers would be able to do.
There was literally a photo of Apu in the background of the scene, with Lisa and Marge both breaking the fourth wall to stare through the TV screen. Firstly, this brushing off of any real conversation about race, diversity, and representation was absolutely no way to respond to such criticism, and to do it through Lisa, the character who has literally battled for social justice in the past, was unacceptable.
It's not often that The Simpsons has found itself embroiled in controversy, however this was something that was instantly regrettable. The quality of the show may have been dipping for decades, but this was rock bottom.
