Every town has a local bully, and in the case of Springfield, that is Nelson Muntz. He seems like he might be a one-note/shallow character on the surface, but the series has done an excellent job of letting you know that there's more to Nelson than meets the eye.

Your first instinct when meeting Nelson is to think of him as a villain, seeing as he spends most of his time picking on the other kids. But, as he progresses in the series, you come to learn about his dysfunctional home life and see that he's harbouring some troubles of his own.

There are even times when you see him open up, like in "Lisa's Date With Destiny", where he and Lisa date. This makes it clear that his bullying antics are just a front for deeper feelings and that he's capable of more than just being a villain.
