The Umbrella Academy: 10 Biggest Changes To The Comics

2. The Origin Of Vanya's Powers

Umbrella Academy Thumb
Dark Horse Comics

Both the first season and first volume of the Umbrella Academy featured Vanya (AKA the White Violin) as the unlikely main antagonist, though her path to villainy is extremely different in the two versions.

Onscreen she is manipulated by Leonard Peabody/Harold Jenkins into turning on her family and unleashing her newly-discovered abilities on them, but, seeing as that character does not exist in the world of the comics, the story is quite different.

Originally, Vanya is invited to perform by the Orchestra Verdammten, despite her having given up on music in the books, being chosen as the one to play the Apocalypse Suite by its conductor. Initially she refuses, but after Diego berates her for "what she did", she returns, going under some dramatic body modifications and emerging as the villain in order to destroy her family.

Vanya ends up in practically the same place in both cases, the comic following a more fantastical route, while the show also stays true to its medium by staying far more grounded.
