8. The Dundies

Even the most die-hard fans of The Office will agree that season 1 did very little in the way of creating what went on to become one of TV’s best sitcoms. It wasn’t until season 2 where the series really began to hit its stride and make the more casual viewers take notice. This was largely due to the show diverging from its beloved British cousin and starting tell its own stories with its own cast of engrossing characters.

Therefore, episode 1 of season 2 should be considered one of the series’ best purely because it symbolises the turning point for a show that went on to become a beloved sitcom. However, it also helps that The Dundies is one of the shows best episodes in its own right.

The episode takes the employees of Dunder Mifflin outside of the office and into a local Chilli’s restaurant for a dreaded work function. The episode is great in fleshing out the amazing cast of characters as the audience are given little nuggets of backstory for characters who were little more than extras in the previous season as Michael’s gives out awards for juvenile categories. This serves to flesh out characters further as the viewer is given tiny nuggets of useless information on characters that serve to help them to appear more like real people rather than just caricatures.
