4. Drug Testing

While the beginning of season 2 marks the point where the show began to tread its own path, it wasn’t until later in the season where the show really hit its stride. With such a large ensemble of characters it is understandable that it would take some time for them to develop and reveal their various nuances. Drug Testing marks the point where the show began to flesh out it’s vibrant group of supporting characters.

The episode sees Dwight find evidence of drugs in the office parking lot, which given Dwight’s penchant for justice, sees him launch a full-scale investigation whilst wearing his volunteer Sheriff’s Deputy uniform. As always, Rainn Wilson is superb as Dwight interrogates his co-workers about the tiny amount of marijuana that was found in the office car park.

Drug Testing is great in the way it develops the characters as Dwight is hit with an internal conflict when Michael asks for his urine to help him pass the drug test. This internal conflict highlights Dwight’s key traits as he is torn between his responsibilities as a volunteer sheriff and his adoration for Michael. Disappointed with his eventual actions, Dwight resigns as a volunteer Sheriffs deputy, however is gifted a ceremonious role as Security Deputy at the office, forgetting all about his initial disappointment with himself.
