The Walking Dead: 10 Best Episodes

6. Killer Within (S3 E4)

The Walking Dead No Way Out
AMC

A prisoner banished by Rick sets off an alarm which attracts walkers to the prison. While Rick hunts down the culprit, T-Dog sacrifices himself for Carol and Lori dies in labour.

Lori was not beloved by Walking Dead fans, but she was an important enough character for her death to be incredibly impactful, if only for its affect on husband Rick and son Carl.

Amidst all of the chaos, there was the hope that Rick, Lori and their children would be able to endure this nightmare together. Her death changed that and made it crystal clear that TWD was not going to be another zombie flick with an inconceivably happy ending.

This was a coming-of-age episode for Grimes junior as he volunteered to shoot his own mother before she reanimated, establishing Carl as a layered character (and a bit of a badass in the making) rather than the vulnerable young boy of the first two seasons.

Andrew Lincoln’s shattered reaction to Lori’s death at the end of the episode is tearjerking, while Sarah Wayne Callies and Chander Riggs also put in performances of great emotion.
