The Walking Dead: 10 Best Episodes

5. Too Far Gone (S4 E8)

The Walking Dead No Way Out
AMC

Too Far Gone was the culmination of The Governor’s 18-month run as the chief villain, as he marched his brainwashed band of followers on the prison to try to seize it from Rick.

The battle is perfectly paced, emanating from tense beginnings as The Governor, flanked by a tank, engages in a Mexican stand-off with a lone and vulnerable Rick, before diving katana first into the action by hacking off Hershel’s head in one of the saddest deaths of the series.

Director Ernest R. Dickerson did a great job of making the protagonists, who had defeated The Governor at Woodbury in season three, look like the underdogs for the return fight with subtle shots of their depleted and withered camp staring down their heavily-armed foes.

The Governor has been the best villain that Rick has faced so far (the jury is still out on Negan) and it was fitting that Michonne would be the one to end him with a sword through the heart, considering the bad blood those two characters had built up during the series.

The separation of the group as they escaped throughout the episode also set up the second half of the season brilliantly, with the fates of most of the characters up in the air.
