The Walking Dead: 10 Characters Who Utterly Underwhelmed

2. Axel

Axel 02 When the prison inmates were found hiding out in the prison, there was an opportunity for the writers to inject a new dynamic to the group. Can they be trusted? Will they be truthful about why they were locked up? Will they be able to work for the benefit of the group or will they act for their own selfish needs? In the comic, the group found a similar set of prisoners and all these questions were asked from the moment they were introduced. But as it happened, they couldn't be trusted and the group learnt that at great cost. But in the TV show, all the prisoners are wasted. Out of all of them, Axel shows the most potential and throughout season 3, he is left simmering in the prison. You never know if you can trust him, especially when Carol catches him flirting with Beth. He then has a fascination with Carol (once he realises that she is not a lesbian) and there is the tantalizing tease that he might be a nice guy or turn out to be a complete psycho who screws with Carol. But before any of that gets off the ground, he is shot in the head by the Governor. Out of all the dead weight in the show, the writers decided to kill the once character who was doing the best had hiding his true intentions. He was doing a much better job of being ambiguous than the Governor but ultimately, he became another underwhelming character in the show.
