Shane is one of the most prominent anti-heroes in the show because looking back, he was the quickest to adapt to the new world, and was making decisions that many characters considered 'good' would have made in the series now. His ruthless sacrifice of Otis was his darkest moment, but things like sleeping with Lori and looking after Carl were all designed to look after them after his best friend's death. Too bad for him Rick didn't die, right? Shane probably went too far in some of his acts, and he was irrational compared to Rick, but that didn't stop his motives from being to survive, just like every other character in the show, by any means necessary.
