The Walking Dead: 10 Huge Questions For Season 10's Finale
8. How Does Virgil Fit In?
A surprise in the trailer was the return of Virgil, who’s made it to the mainland after seemingly staying on the island to be with family. Has Michonne’s mercy had an effect on him? Can he even be trusted?
Virgil kept prisoners on his island for a long time, and drugged Michonne with hallucinogens grown on the island. It’s a surprise to see him back on the show at all after 10x13 seemed very final with him, but it’s an interesting turn of events.
Mostly he is going to exist as a way to corroborate Judith’s story, so the others can learn Michonne is missing and Rick is alive. Beyond that, he doesn’t serve much purpose and doesn’t seem like a long term survivor, especially as he has done such terrible things.
This lines him up for dying, potentially in a sacrifice for the others. Perhaps Virgil could be the one to get Gabriel’s comic book death, falling from a watchtower, breaking a leg and being stabbed by Beta, only to then be consumed by the dead.
It’s such a horribly violent death that a character like Virgil could well take it, partially to complete his redemption arc and join his family, but also because he’s done things that make him unlikable. In the comics it’s Gabriel who gets that death, but in the source material he’s barely a recognisable character, so if the show wants someone equally as fringe to kill so brutally, Virgil is the one to watch out for.
