For all intents and purposes, The Governor was a serviceable antagonist. His characterization was often uneven and he didnt live up to the menace of the comics, but he did present a centralized and focused threat. Traditionally, shows will use the template of a big bad, a central antagonist for one season who is dispatched with in some way during the finale so the next season can host a new set of problems. For whatever reason, The Governor was kept alive for a few extra episodes, largely overstaying his welcome. His death ought to have occurred in the previous season finale, so when his long overdue exit came, it was great to watch. The death itself was suitably overkill. After seeing him mistreat and lie to his followers yet again, hes finally stabbed through the back by Michonne and then left to be eaten by the walkers. Not content wit this, Lilly finishes him off with a bullet to the head and he's left to rot.
