Dwight's defection and decision to act as a double agent for Rick was a crucial factor in Negan's downfall, and he remains vital to the protagonist in the war's aftermath.

Once the dust has settled, Rick hands control of Sanctuary over to Dwight and he's a success in the role in Negan's absence, despite disliking the position.

In more recent issues, Dwight feels he could better could serve the former sheriff in another capacity, and becomes his head general during the war with The Whisperers.

Interestingly, he also becomes the new custodian of Lucille in the wake of Negan's defeat, but hands her back to her former owner to help him defeat the enemy's second in command, Beta, a battle which ends with the bat splintered.

It's unclear whether Dwight's role in the TV show will be as significant as his comic counterpart going forward, given that Rick already has a fine righthand man in Daryl, but it would make sense to hand him control of Sanctuary.

Rumours suggest Lucille could be destroyed during the events of season 8's war, which would be a major departure from the comics and a pivotal moment for Negan, who vicariously mourns his ex-wife by holding a funeral for the bat.
