The Walking Dead: 10 Twists You Never Saw Coming

7. Carl Gets Shot In The Eye

While Carl losing his eye was a key moment in the comics and a cornerstone of Carl's character going forward, many doubted that this particular moment would actually be translated to the TV show. The show had already begun to make quite a few changes to the story, and Carl losing his eye was always going to be more of an issue on the programme.

For a start it'd be quite a gory feature to have on TV. Then you have to consider that it would require Chandler Riggs to be in detailed makeup for the entire run of the remaining show, and it quickly became easy to imagine that the writers would find a different injury to give Carl. But when it came to translating the No Way Out story arc to the small screen, the writers ultimately took no shortcuts.

Heightening the stakes of the episode ten fold, the slow reveal as Carl lifts his head to show he had been shot in the eye was one of the best moments of the sixth season of the show. It's just a shame the direction the writers decided to take Carl after this...but more on that later.
