Sophia was still missing, Carl was fighting for his life, while the ever-annoying Lori was genuinely weighing up whether they should end her son's life to save him from the world he would wake up in, but the key theme throughout Save The Last One was the transition of Shane. Tensions has been simmering with Shane throughout, though this is the episode that shows the exact moment he transformed. While on an errand with Otis, the Greene family ranch hand, the pair are overrun by walkers and are wounded trying to flee. They're limping towards their getaway, but the walkers are gaining on them, with supplies low. Shane makes the decision to use his remaining bullet on Otis, and after the pair scuffle, Otis is left for dead and torn apart by the undead, a perfect distraction leading to Shane's escape. He is seen cleaning himself up after the incident, and after realising Otis had pulled out a clump of his hair in the fight, Shane proceeds to shave his head to destroy the evidence, symbolising his transition.
