Harking back to the theory that Walking Dead mid-season finales couldn't be topped by end-of-season dramatics, Too Far Gone spun the world upside down, affecting the lives of every character irreversibly. The prison was sustainable and defendable to an extent, but The Governor's siege dashed all hopes of peace within the fences, despite Rick and Hershel's attempts to forge an unlikely co-existence in the prison. Hershel is cruelly beheaded, and war erupts. The Governor is killed, but the damage is done, the prison is overrun and Rick flees with Carl, with baby Judith's whereabouts unknown. The whole episode is like pausing an explosion mid-way through. It's shocking, scattering, and a fatal blow to their whole way of life. The group is completely dispersed, arguably the biggest catastrophe to strike the group since the walkers first emerged.
