It seems like an age ago since the divisive Dale met his end, with those days feeling like they took place in a different world to the one which the characters now find themselves in. His funeral was held at the start of Better Angels, and after his death, fans were about to be shocked with another major departure. Shane also seems a long-forgotten memory, as his conflict with Rick over Lori constantly edged towards boiling point, culminating in the final scene of this episode. Despite being close friends before the disaster, Shane warped into the Anti-Grimes. They were two similar men, who were shaken in different directions by the crisis. He wasn't strictly a villain, with some people drawing similarities between him and the 'new' ruthless Rick in later seasons, but Shane couldn't exist in the same world as Rick at the time - one man had to die. It wasn't going to be Rick.
