There will be lots of nameless victims to demonstrate the scale of the conflict, and because there are not that many names for us to put to faces among the evil.
Now that Dwight has abandoned The Saviours to play double agent, Simon is the most recognisable of Negan’s allies, having appeared in five episodes last season, most notably as the man responsible for babysitting Gregory at Hilltop Colony.
Rick and company are going to war for a better life, for a safer world, but they are also fighting for retribution for Glenn and Abraham, and the other friends they have lost.
With Negan likely to live whatever the result, Simon must die in the season finale in order for Rick’s victory to be fulfilling enough for a satisfying conclusion.
