As Ezekiel’s happy-go-lucky steward, Jerry was a popular addition to the show in season eight; a rare symbol of enthusiasm in an otherwise miserable run under Negan’s suffering.
The season eight trailer shows him in the thick of the action, marvelling at the coolness of his King, and he will remain a loyal servant right up until his murder by The Saviours.
Jerry’s death will not be for nothing, though, as it can serve two greater purposes. If he was fed to Simon, hatred would grow against Negan’s deputy that would make his death all the more satisfying. Secondly, it would contribute to the breakdown of Ezekiel’s royal facade.
King Ezekiel is an enjoyable character, but there is intrigue about the man underneath the metaphorical crown. If he loses Shiva, Jerry and his Kingdom during the conflict, viewers might get to see behind Ezekiel’s mask and discover more about him in future seasons.
His fondness for Carol is worth further exploration, and he has the presence to create interesting dynamics with other main characters also. But to truly delve deeper into Ezekiel, he must be stripped back and have everything taken away from him, including Jerry.
