The Walking Dead: 8 Things "Forget" Got Right (And 2 It Didn't)
The Bad...
2. SYMBOLISM
There was subtlety and sensitivity to be found in a lot of the writing of Forget, which is all the more impressive when you consider how rare The Walking Dead manages either of those things. This is the show whose most major villain was a guy in an eye patch, after all, the accessory that's been used to identify bad guys ever since Treasure Island. For the most part this episode did manage to suggest a dividing line between Rick's group and Alexandria, with one having truly experienced a world decimated and the other trying to pretend like nothing ever changed and life goes on, in a way that was never bashing the audience around the head. ...With the exception of that cold open, which saw Sasha taking a load of family photos out into the woods for target practise. Now there's some Major League Symbolism for you right there. For an episode that was otherwise so perfectly handled and tonally confident, this was a very basic and silly bit of storytelling.
