In Consumed, Daryl finally catches a break when he spots the car that kidnapped Beth in the previous season episode Alone. The episode follows Daryl and Carol as they race into the city to find clues about Beth's location.
But Consumed is actually a lot deeper than that. Whilst the focus seems to be on the pair's latest mission to save a friend, the true core of the episode is about how much they've changed, and how they're still combating the traumas in their lives.
Both Daryl and Carol's abusive pasts come to light here, allowing Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride to give typically stirring performances, and though the episode suffers from not including Rick et al, it's nonetheless deeply rewarding stuff.
It's a bit slow in the middle, but between its contemplative drama and performances, Consumed is still a great ride, and the fact that it's so low on this list just goes to show how strong season five really is at its best.
