Self Help is one of the season's more underappreciated gems, focussed on Abraham Ford's attempts to get Eugene to Washington DC. Part road trip, part flashback, the episode gives striking insight into Abraham's background, and comes complete with a game-changing plot twist.
The key takeaway from the episode is surely Eugene's revelation that he lied about being a scientist able to save the world, which, whilst brilliant, is unable to surpass the raw emotion of Michael Cudlitz's performance or Abraham's harrowing origins.
An episode that features countless action scenes - including one where Eugene dispatches a herd with a water hose - and affecting character development, Self Help has a brief lull when the group take shelter, but is otherwise phenomenal and immeasurably important to the rest of the season's major developments.
