3. Sing Me A Song

The Walking Dead Season 7 Episodes

With Carl's suicide mission to take down Negan not going off quite as planned, the rest of this episode saw the cycloptic teen taken in by Negan and given the grand tour of the Sanctuary. The hour had a few other threads going on - Rick and Aaron's quest to find stuff, Rosita's endeavor to bully Eugene into making her bullets, Daryl being given the chance to escape, and Spencer doing his own thing after being perfectly shut down by Gabriel - but really this was yet another showcase for Negan and the Saviors.

Through Carl, viewers got the chance to see a bit more of how their world works on the inside from an outsider's perspective, like Negan's wives to the use of the iron as punishment, and got a fleeting glimpse of humanity in Negan himself when he paused to apologize to a crying Carl, whose bandages were finally lifted to reveal the empty, damaged socket underneath. Beyond that, comic readers got the chance to see a handful of familiar moments brought to life, particularly Carl being forced to sing as Negan swings Lucille in the background.

Throw in Negan's return to Alexandria near the end of the hour, which brought with it even more antics like a goofy montage around the house, a reunion with Olivia, and meeting Judith for the first time, and it all added up to another tense, albeit darkly humorous episode that teed up the events of the midseason finale.
