After four episodes of relentless violence, The Big Scary U slows season eight down for the first time and allows its characters time to talk.

The biggest draw of the episode comes from Negan and Gabriel's fun, unexpected interactions, as they're trapped outside the Sanctuary together and end up sharing details of their past sins. At the end of the episode, there's also a thrilling stand-off between Rick and Daryl, whose views on the war are deeply conflicted.

As noted, it's a lot slower than what's come before, and it hits a bit of a lull with a subplot involving Eugene and Dwight's attempts to keep Negan's loyalty, but all told The Big Scary U just about keeps up the momentum of the previous four episodes, all of which are surprisingly brilliant.
