Currently rushing back to his friends with Eugene, Yumiko and newcomer Princess, he's definitely been set up to play a part in the upcoming fight.

And, really, his death has been teased all season: His diagnosis means he's dying anyway, and he knows it; his reconciliation with Carol made for a heartfelt goodbye; and his farewell to Jerry hammered home the fact that the king's time is up.

In the comics, he dies in Henry's place during the infamous pike scene, and since this has come and passed on the show, his story seems to be getting stretched so he can have one last stand before he dies, fighting for and saving those he loves.
