The Walking Dead Season 11 Review: 9 Ups & 1 Down From "On The Inside"

4. UP: It's The Scariest Episode Of The Entire Series

The Walking Dead
AMC

It might be a bold statement given the longevity of the show and its recent foray into all-out horror with the Whisperer War, but On the Inside has to be The Walking Dead's scariest episode to date.

Opening to almost complete darkness as Connie and Virgil flee from the dead and are seemingly stalked by an unknown threat (Reapers? Whisperers?), most of the episode takes place in an abandoned house, as Connie and Virgil realise they're not alone.

Increasingly claustrophobic and disturbingly bleak, the episode finds the pair split up and set upon a new threat that's unlike anything the show's ever seen before.

Though much of the horror comes from the mystery of what's in the house with them, as well as the episode's aforementioned score, it's at its best when it uses Connie's deafness to throw scenes into complete silence before revealing the terror lurking around her.

Between the tight setting, Ridloff's performance and the horrifying villains, On the Inside is not an episode for the fainthearted, but is more than worth the torment.
