The Walking Dead Season 6: 5 New Characters You Need To Know

5. Dr Denise Cloyd

When it was announced at San Diego Comic-Con that Merritt Wever would be joining the cast for season 6, it was rumoured that she€™d be playing the comics character Dr Denise Cloyd, and now showrunner Scott Gimple has confirmed to EW that is definitely the case.

It makes sense to introduce her now, because since Pete was killed in the season finale by Rick, Alexandria is in need of a medic. Within the comics, she is the only doctor who is actually a qualified surgeon, which could come in very handy to the group, especially if they follow a particular storyline from the comics.

That would mean she€™d have a pretty major part to play, but even if they don€™t go down that route she€™s still likely to be an important character because of her training and role as the primary medic in Alexandria.

Wever of course has form playing a healthcare professional, having starred as the nurse Zoey Barkow in Nurse Jackie, a role that landed her an Emmy award back in 2013. This time around, though, you€™d imagine there€™ll be far less comedy involved.

As a medic she forms a pretty stable relationship with Rick, because as the leader of the group it€™s fairly important they can have at least a working relationship, but her strongest link is with Heath, another of the new characters we€™re going to be meeting this year.
