Ultimately, Benjamin wasn't so much a character as he was a plot device: his purpose was to make Morgan think about the philosophy he'd chosen, and then go back to killing upon the kid's death.

As plot device characters go, however, Benjamin worked really well: it setup a brilliant turn for Morgan, and he was a nice, sweet guy before that happened. That in itself was reason to know he wasn't going to be long for this world, but as things went even further to hell and everything became so bleak, he made for a nice contrast to all that misery.
