Father Gabriel is another character who has shown considerable growth in the past couple of seasons, going from the cowardly and untrustworthy priest to someone who has the utmost respect of Rick Grimes.

Likewise, he's gone from a character who's appearances were groan-inducing, to one who is actually quite interesting and funny to watch (even if a lot of the time that humour seems unintentional).

Unfortunately he doesn't get to do a whole lot in Season 7 - his biggest contribution to the plot is effectively being kidnapped by the Scavengers - but he does nonetheless get to continue his character development, completed by leading the charge against the Saviours in the finale. One day he's going to go out in tragic, heroic fashion, and that's saying a lot of someone who was once the show's mot expendable character.
