Aaron is one of the characters who exists on the cusp of being a major player, yet falls outside the top category - like half of the people in the Negan line-up, really.

That shows throughout the course of the season, where Aaron is left-out of the action for large periods at a time. When he is involved, however, he shows that he is a solid supporting player, engaging in an entertaining mission with Rick before getting the crap beat out of him by the Saviours. The show also finally remembered he's in a relationship with Eric, which was nice to see.
