The Walking Dead Season 8: 9 Things We Learned From SDCC 2017

9. Negan Has Captured Father Gabriel

The Walking Dead Father Gabriel
AMC

The Comic-Con trailer opens up on Father Gabriel, locked in a darkened room and looking pretty terrified. To immediately answer the question of where he is (though it's easy to guess), Negan appears on screen, meaning it's once more pants shi**ing time.

Gabriel doesn't have a big part to play in All Out War in the comics, but is seemingly getting a more prominent part to play here. That reflects his rising status on the show, which has seen him go from selling Rick out to being one of his trusted lieutenants.

Him being captured by Negan is an interesting development, given he was still 'safe' at the end of Season 7. Taking members of Rick's group hostage has been a part of Negan's modus operandi, and he's not changing that anytime soon.

As for Gabriel, he is someone to worry about this year. He's definitely on the expendable list, in that sweet spot of his character being recognisable enough that his death caries some weight, but without impacting the direction of the show too much. While it probably won't be spoiling how he meets his end here (although it's not shown in chronological order, the trailer does have him in a few other scenes), there's a good chance Gabriel will die in Season 8.
