The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live Review - 5 Ups & 5 Downs From "Become"

3. Up: Jadis Takes Centre Stage

The Ones Who Live
AMC

The best part of "Become" by some considerable margin is its primary character, which in this week's case is Jadis, who takes centre stage and is finally afforded the opportunity to have her backstory explored.

In the present, Jadis pursues Rick and Michonne with a near-primal urgency; in her flashbacks with Gabriel, her connection with the CRM proves too powerful to overcome, a tragic contrast to Rick's own circumstance earlier in the series. For Jadis, though, she can't be saved, try as Gabriel might to bring her back.

Jadis eventually captures Rick and Michonne, but not for long. Remember, these two are back on form, and it's going to take more than a weak zip-tie to keep them down. They escape, mortally wound Jadis, and flee from her despite her motivations - which are a bit too foggy - being about protecting their home.

Jadis is the ultimate symbol of what the CRM does to good people, turning them - just as it did to the late Lieutenant Okafor - into monsters too deep to turn back. Watching her attempt to bring her old friends down only to fall is harrowing stuff, the end of one of The Walking Dead's most tragic character arcs.
