The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live Review - 8 Ups & 2 Downs From "What We"

1. Up: It's The Best Episode of The Walking Dead in Years

In the end, there's a lot that can be said of this week's episode, because in truth it's the best hour of Walking Dead television we've been given since before Andrew Lincoln was written out of the mainline series.

Like the early years of the franchise, before things became a bit too silly and outlandish (a la Negan and everything that ever happened on Fear the Walking Dead), "What We" is character driven and horrifying, full of unsettling imagery and characters who feel real, necessary to each other, and burdened by tangible, human emotion.

For anyone who's stuck around with The Walking Dead over the years, this week's episode is a stunning display pitting two of its most beloved and complex figures together with great emotion and years of history rising to the surface.

We can hope earlier episodes had ironed out their issues to give us this kind of quality sooner, but this week was definitely worth the build-up.

That being said, questions still linger: How will Rick and Michonne actually get home? Will Jadis come for them? Will we get a Grimes family reunion, or another season? Time will tell, but until then let's hope the rest of the miniseries is as compelling as this. It's good to be back.
