The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live Review - 8 Ups & 2 Downs From "What We"
2. Up: Danai Gurira's Compelling Writing
None of this episode's greatest highs would be possible without great writing, and "What We" has itself a very special scribe in Michonne herself, Danai Gurira.
Before landing her most recognisable role in 2011, Gurira was a celebrated playwright (which certainly explains this episode's theatrical tone), and here she shows she hasn't lost any of his ability as a storyteller, bringing Rick and Michonne's relationship to the forefront with startling honesty and authentic dialogue.
That Gurira has lived with these characters for so long surely helped her craft so many powerful moments between the pair, and gives insight into why the episode has so many references to the old series - from Carl to RJ, Judith to the Alexandria Rick once knew.
Beautiful and harrowing, romantic and tender, "What We" is an episode reminiscent of old Walking Dead episodes like season four's "Still" (with Daryl and Beth) and "Here's Not Here" (with Morgan and Eastman the cheesemaker), and who doesn't want to see episodes like that again? Gurira nails it.
