The X-Files: 10 Overlooked Episodes That Are Secretly Classics

2. Grotesque - Season 3, Episode 14

Grotesque X-Files
Fox

Despite being so steadfast in his more fantastical beliefs, Mulder is always shown to be of sound mind. Even when faced with the most bizarre and unfathomable scenarios, he is always able to retain his firm grip on reality and apply logic where there is none.

Perhaps this is why 'Grotesque' is such an effective episode, as it's the first time we see Mulder's sanity called into question.

By special request, Mulder and Scully are brought in to investigate a string of murders where the perpetrators claim to have been possessed with the spirit of a gargoyle. It doesn't take long for Mulder to also fall under the same spell, and his behaviour becomes increasingly more erratic.

Night after night, he finds himself within an eerie industrial site and crafting clay sculptures of gargoyles. Try as she might, Scully is unable to reason with him, and we slowly watch Mulder lose all sense of himself as the bodies begin to pile up.

Beneath the inherent creepiness of the episode, there are plenty of great performances found throughout and the underlying mystery as to what's truly going on is just as captivating as watching Mulder's slow descent into madness.

A must-watch for those that really enjoy psychological horror.
