The X-Files: 10 Things We Learned From Home Again

7. Seeing Margaret Scully Again Was Bittersweet

This may be something of a personal pet peeve, but bringing back a character from a beloved show's early years late in its run just to kill them off is pretty annoying. The great thing about Scully's mom on the original run of The X-Files was that Margaret Scully wasn't generally a part of the insanity. She was just a good mom - warm and loving and genuine and outside of all the drama. In Home Again, a call from Scully's brother Bill notifies her that their mother has had a heart attack, is in a coma, and by the end of the episode - with the exception of a brief awakening to mention Mulder and Scully's son, William - she's dead. It's moving only because we as fans of the show know who she is. Frankly, however, it feels rushed - the downside of the six episode run. It's also just a downer. We get it, parents die, and we all have to cope with it, grieve, and move on. Still, both Mulder and Scully are now parentless, and while we feel for Scully, the whole plotline seemed unnecessary.
