The X-Files: 10 Things We Learned From Home Again

6. This Was Not The Time To Start A New Mystery

Speaking of unnecessary: while in the hospital, Scully finds that her mother has been wearing a mysterious coin she has had put on a chain, and that she has asked to see her youngest son, Charlie, from whom the entire family seems to be estranged - though the exact reason is never explicitly stated. This might have been interesting sometime back in season six or so, but in 2016, it feels a little too late, and again, a little too forced. There's no way the show can address any sort of new mystery within the family in the two episodes they have left this season, and if the show is never brought back - or only has another limited run, or a final feature film - then you've got a throwaway plotline that wasted screen time for no good reason. Besides, does anyone even remember that Scully had a younger brother? Older brother Bill appeared several times, as did her sister and mother, but Charlie was only ever seen on screen in flashbacks once or twice, and mentioned a few times beyond that in name. Why not throw in a zany cousin while you're at it?
