18. Just How Did The X-Files Get Re-Opened Anyway?
Mulder and Scully are back on the case, fully reinstated into an FBI that banished them and closed their division over a decade ago, wanting nothing to do with them (except that one time in 2008 when the bureau needed their help). And nobody quite knows why, how, or even exactly when that reinstatement happened. Neither My Struggle nor Founder's Mutation explicitly answers the question of why the FBI has changed course on the duo. Assistant Director Skinner does utter "welcome back" at one point, but at no time is the pair ever officially brought back into the fold on-screen. It's a really odd oversight, although there is one possible explanation: the episode order was shuffled, and Founder's Mutation was actually the fifth episode filmed. Since conspiracy theories abound when it comes to The X-Files, maybe another episode had scenes dealing with this issue, but was pushed back.
