4. Made For TV Movie
While I would love to see Mulder and Scully grace the silver screen, the likelihood of that occurring is not great. The second (and most recent) X-Files film was a box office lightweight. While the budget was very, very small for a Hollywood studio production and the film probably recouped its budget and maybe even made a small profit, I doubt Fox would gamble on another silver screen sequel. Therefore, a made for TV film could be a good route to go. It would give an opportunity for the franchise to explore the mythology with a two hour time frame and allow David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson to make a commitment without long term implications (aka full on TV show). The cost would be cheaper, the risk less, and it could still reach a wide audience and allow fans to watch from home without the need to shell out for an ever-increasing cost of a movie ticket. I also think that a return to the small screen may win over diehard fans. Some were turned away by The X-Files: I Want to Believe. While I personally enjoyed the film and felt it touched on the heart of the show (which really was the idea of belief and faith, not just UFOs and conspiracies), many were turned off. A TV movie would allow X-Philes to watch with convenience without the need to make a commitment (aka trek to the theater and shell out cash).
