Yes, the whole flashbacks within flashbacks were confusing from a narrative standpoint, but it's hard to deny that the content itself was great.

The quick flashbacks to Slade's life in the military and how he was ultimately enhanced certainly reinforced how formidable a foe he was, giving us a chance to see him in action long before he was wielding that sword, while the flashbacks to his family life allowed us to really see the man behind the mask.

It was clear that, in spite of the heinous things he had done, he loved his family very much - and it's character depth like that that makes him a lot more interesting of a villain than Trigon ever was.
