Titans Season 2: 5 Ups & 3 Downs From 'Atonement'
3. Dick's Journey To Redemption
Dick Grayson's attempts to atone for the sins of his past provided the rich character with yet another grounded and engaging narrative to serve as the center of the aptly titled 'Atonement'. Sure, it made for one of the more thematically heavier storylines of the episode, but it was the one that felt the most worthy of presenting itself that way.
That journey towards forgiveness brought him face-to-face with Jericho's mother Adeline because now that his secret was out in the open, it was time to start dealing with it. Although Adeline wasn't willing to forgive him, that meeting unexpectedly resulted in him running into Slade Wilson himself - who had reverted to his life of retirement knowing that he had succeeded in his mission to destroy the Titans.
The fact that this near-invincible assassin had so easily relinquished his apparent desire to kill the Titans highlighted that it was never about killing any one of them - it was about destroying Dick. This not only grounded the story and portrayed Slade as a well-rounded three-dimensional character, it allowed Dick to understand how his actions ultimately turned one of the world's most unstoppable killers into a grieving father.
Knowing this version of Dick like we do, it's hardly surprising that he did something as erratic as attacking those security guards, but if anything, this is his attempt to redeem himself for everything that happened in the past. While his actions may be a little misguided, this journey will finally allow him to overcome the past and move forward - something we're all looking forward to seeing him do.
