Titans Season 2 Finale: 6 Ups & 5 Downs From ‘Nightwing’

3. Coming Full Circle

The purpose of a season finale is to close the book on the story that its respective show was attempting to tell that year - something Titans failed to do last year with its conclusion to Season 1. But it's not just about wrapping the story up with a neat little bow, it's about bringing said story full-circle by highlighting how the journey ultimately got the show's characters to that point.

Though 'Nightwing' didn't tick all of the season finale boxes, it did nail some of them as it was hard to watch the episode without noticing how specific elements reflected the season premiere. One particularly brilliant moment came when Rachel grabbed the brainwashed Gar's paw and kick-started a wave of memories that ultimately brought him back to her - a nice inversion of how he did the same to her in the premiere when she was under Trigon's tutelage.

On a similar note, Dick figured out how to stop Conner by utilising Rachel's abilities to get inside of his head so that he could break him out from within. Not only was this also a nod to how she helped him out of his darkness in 'Trigon', it showcased everything that Dick had learned from his recent experiences and mistakes, proving that teamwork was the answer all along.

Considering the premiere was mostly just the original Season 1 finale, it's impressive that the Season 2 finale managed to incorporate these nods - and they did so in such an organic way that complemented some of this season's character journeys by having certain characters utilise skills and lessons they learned throughout. Now that's what we like to call character development.
