Leave it to a television legend like Dick Van Dyke to tug heartstrings and tickle funny bones at the same time. Van Dyke plays Ken, a serious boyfriend of Dorothy's who works as one of Miami's most successful lawyers. On the weekend, he moonlights as a clown for children's events, but when he decides to give up his day job and don the make-up and floppy shoes full-time for a circus, we have a problem. Dorothy tries to be supportive, but her own doubts (and Sophia's barbs) make it hard for her to enjoy life with the circus folk. When Ken asks her to come on the road with him and she hesitates, Dorothy is stricken by the truth - if she really loved him, she'd follow him anywhere. Ken, too, realizes that if he really loved Dorothy, he'd give up the big top and stay in Miami with her. The two part with a bittersweet kiss. Van Dyke's performance was masterful, and not just to the fans of the show he was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series at the 1990 Emmy Awards.
