Trese Netflix Review: 9 Ups & 2 Downs
6. Up: Writing And Themes
For having only six short episodes to lay out its large, overarching plot and many iconic cases, the writing does a great job navigating the story for almost the entirety of its runtime.
It mixes the monochrome past well with its darker, more colourful present, able to piece together Trese's thematic journey and how she became the almost vicious, unerring protector of the human world that she is.
The many cases from the comics are adapted and fit together to serve each episode's theme and to tie these mysteries together, even when the cases themselves feel standalone.
Each case covers thematically relevant issues alongside its supernatural explanations, from corruption to violence against the poor, as well as the fragility of trust between powerful and ambitious people, and how unavoidable it is to make hard choices for the greater good.
Trese's own journey is one full of loss and strength, the story of a healer and protector and human being who has to navigate being surrounded by death and remain stalwart throughout, a sentiment and experience unfortunately echoed in real life by many living in the Metro.
