True Detective Season 2 Trailer: 10 Things You Need To Know
10. In The City
This tease sets out its stall in the very opening shot: the second season is going to be very, very different from the first. Pizzolatto always set out to do True Detective as a sort of anthology series, with each season featuring a totally new cast of characters and certainly in this case a totally different setting. The first season made use of deepest, darkest Louisiana, a locale familiar to the writer and relatively underused in both film and television. It worked for that story, too, weaving in the history of violence and fundamentalist religion the region has with the plot about those murderous Carcosa followers. From what little has been revealed about the story for True Detective season two suggests that wouldn't really work as a geographic parallel. And so the opening shot of the trailer is not of the relatively desert, swampy, dark marshes of the South, but the bustling, sun-kissed metropolis that is central California, with huge swathes of traffic circling around a knotted highway. True Detective season one looked into the dark corners of the US, and the darkness stared back in season two, it's a familiar, shiny city that has something dodgy going on underneath.
